Cinematic Scene #1 - Peter Saltzman

Cinematic Scene #1

$3.95

This nocturne started its life as a submission for a movie sync licensing cue. For better or worse, it wasn't chosen for that job—and I think I know why: it's too complex for the kind of sad, bereft scene it was supposed to underscore. Or maybe it's just too sad—or not underscore-ish enough.

I have written some film music, but I have an essential problem with the medium (not film but underscoring.) The problem is that film music is generally meant to be background. I'm a foreground type of composer, always needing to impose my artistic will on the world. The one thing I notice about most film music is that it doesn't stand too well on its merits. I mean out of the context for which it is composed—to support the film.

This nocturne stands on its own.
